In Russia’s Kursk region, Ukrainian forces have targeted and demolished another critical bridge, the Ukrainian Air Force said recently. This marks a continuation of Ukraine’s aggressive strategy, disrupting Russian logistics networks amid an ongoing incursion.
A Ukrainian military unit stationed at a former Russian-controlled facility in Kursk successfully carried out the operation on August 18, 2024, The Washington Post reported. The move underscores Ukraine’s deep push into Russian territory, which began nearly two weeks earlier and involves about 5,000 troops.
Since the incursion, Ukrainian forces say they have taken control of 82 settlements in an area of 1,150 square kilometers. Their strategic goal has been to paralyze transportation and fuel supply lines, which are crucial to Russian military operations in the ongoing conflicts in eastern and southern Ukraine.
The recent destruction of the Seim River bridge on Friday, crucial for transporting military supplies to frontline areas, has been confirmed by both Ukrainian and Russian officials. This event has significantly hampered evacuation efforts and logistical movements in the region.
Following this strategic operation, Ukrainian forces targeted a key oil depot in the nearby Rostov region on Saturday evening. This depot has been instrumental in fueling Russian military operations, and its destruction represents an ongoing effort to weaken Russia’s military capabilities and economic resilience.
Further compounding Russia’s logistical challenges, another bridge was destroyed near the village of Zvannoye on Sunday, the Ukrainian Air Force reported, supported by footage on social media showing extensive damage.
Amid these developments, Russia’s response has been criticized for its ineffectiveness. Russian military bloggers and defense analysts have pointed to slow and inadequate countermeasures to Ukraine’s assertive maneuvers.
The Institute for the Study of War noted that while Russian forces have succeeded in slowing Ukraine’s initial rapid advances, a more substantial military response will be needed to regain control over the disputed regions. This would likely involve a significant reallocation of resources in the Kursk area.
In his recent speech, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the strategic goal of these operations: to reduce Russia’s war-making capacity and establish a buffer zone to safeguard Ukraine’s border regions. He highlighted the continued need for increased support from Western allies, urging rapid deliveries of promised military aid to support the offensive.
